Steven was born on October 8th, 1987 to a musical family in which several family members are musicians. It was his father, an exquisite sound engineer and technician, who sparked the love for gear and sound in Steven's life. It became clear that young Steven carried music in him, so at age 7 he started playing the piano. When he was older, his parents bought him a computer. It didn't take long for Steven to start experimenting with music production software and soon his first electronic beats would sound through the house.
Graduated from high school at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven as a classical pianist in 2006, he found himself unsatisfied and went to the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp to study jazz music. Meanwhile, still twiddling knobs at home, he came up with a certain sound and started releasing music worldwide under the aliases MicroControlUnit & Varaz.
Currently he teaches Jazz & Pop piano at the Art Schools of Waregem & Tielt. You can also book private lessons in his homestudio.
In 2023 he formed his jazz trio “Shadow Mo Trio” with Felix De Clerck (electric bass) and Dajo Vlaeminckx (drums).
Besides music, Steven loves Asian food, sci-fi and good horror movies.
